We use the term narrowly. A private email provider is one where (1) your addresses sit on a domain you own, so the provider can never hold them hostage; (2) the provider's revenue is your subscription, not advertising, so there is no commercial reason to read your mail; and (3) your mailbox exports over standard IMAP so you can leave without asking permission. End-to-end encryption is a fourth, optional property — Proton Mail is the only provider on this page that sells it as its core feature, and we say so plainly rather than implying everyone does.

That definition rules out the obvious defaults. Free Gmail and Outlook.com fail the first two, and 'free' mailboxes bundled with shared web hosting fail the third: they die the day you change hosts. Custom-domain Gmail exists, but only as Google Workspace at $7/user/mo — the price of a suite, not of private email.

$19/yr: Migadu Micro — unlimited domains and unlimited addresses against 5 GB of pooled storage, capped at 20 outbound messages per day. Renewal equals the entry price. Swiss operator. Mini is $90/yr for 30 GB with substantially higher limits.

No intro discount; 24- and 36-month terms are cheaper. The $3 Basic tier is @fastmail.com addresses only and doesn't belong on a private-email ladder.

Bills in Swiss francs only, so US buyers pay card FX fees.

Migadu bills for capacity, never for mailboxes or domains, which is why $19/yr can cover every address you own. The pricing page reads like a terms sheet — storage, volume expectations, and exactly what each tier tolerates are all published — and we trust vendors more, not less, for that. The catch is real and enforced: Micro's 20-outbound-messages-a-day cap makes it a receiving-heavy plan. Respect it and it's superb; outgrow it and Mini at $90/yr or MXroute at $59/yr is the honest next step. Full IMAP, catch-alls, aliases, and wildcard addresses are all standard, and because everything is plain IMAP, leaving is as easy as arriving. MXroute is the quiet pick when you want reliable email on your own domain without Google or Microsoft in the loop: $59/yr for 10 GB with unlimited domains and mailboxes, no per-seat charges, and a renewal price that equals the entry price. It's a long-running independent with a devoted technical following, queue-based human support, direct documentation, and famously strict anti-spam enforcement that protects its sending reputation. It is email only — no documents, calendar suite, or chat — and the admin UI is functional rather than polished. Fastmail's business model is subscriptions, not advertising, and it doesn't scan mail to profile you. What you're paying $5/user/mo for is software: the fastest webmail we've used, built on JMAP alongside full IMAP, CalDAV, and CardDAV, plus masked email — a unique throwaway address per signup so you know exactly who leaked it. The built-in importer pulls mail, contacts, and calendars straight from Google, which makes it the most painless de-Googling path here. Know the tier line before buying: custom domains start at Standard, not the $3 Basic plan. If end-to-end encryption is a genuine requirement rather than a nice-to-have, Proton is the most polished option that doesn't feel like a science project. Mail Essentials at $6.99/user/mo billed yearly (verified in a real browser session, September 2026) buys 15 GB per user, up to 3 custom domains and aliases, and the bundled Calendar, Drive, and VPN. The trade-offs are structural: encryption means standard IMAP clients need Proton's Bridge app, and the external integration ecosystem is smaller. Infomaniak answers a question the others don't: where, physically and legally, does my mail live? Every data center is in Switzerland, all staff are in Switzerland, and since May 2026 a public-interest foundation holds majority voting rights — a genuinely different answer to 'who will own my host in five years?' kSuite Standard at about CHF 1.76/user/mo billed annually includes two custom-domain mailboxes per user with unlimited mail storage; the standalone Mail Service is CHF 2.29 per mailbox. The caveats are real for Americans: billing is CHF-only, support runs 6am–9pm Swiss time, and the free email tier requires a phone number from a supported country. If your team collaborates in Docs, Sheets, or SharePoint every day, buy the suite you already live in — Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 at $7/user/mo — and stop reading. None of the providers here try to replace shared drives or meetings, and pairing a private mailbox with a suite you're paying for anyway is paying twice.

If you want a $0 mailbox and are honestly fine with the trade, free Gmail is an excellent product; this page exists for people who've decided they'd rather pay. If you need bulk or marketing sending, every provider here prohibits it — use a transactional service. And if 'private' means end-to-end encryption to you specifically, Proton is the only one of the five that sells end-to-end encrypted mailboxes as its core feature; the others we recommend for the business-model and data-portability kind of privacy.
