Our take

The $1 deals are real and the renewals are steep — IONOS discloses both on the same page, which is more than some rivals do. Fine value if you diarize the renewal date; expensive if you set and forget.

## IONOS, beyond the scorecard

Plan details as published on ionos.com, September 2026 — verify with the vendor before you buy.

### Plans, as published

IONOS's shared lineup as published in September 2026 runs four tiers, all on 1-year terms: Essential at $4/mo, Starter at $6/mo, Plus at $1/mo, and Ultimate at $10/mo. Yes, the mid-tier Plus plan is the cheapest at intro — that $1/mo headline is the deal IONOS advertises hardest. Every plan includes a free domain for the first year, a wildcard SSL, and a 2 GB email account.

Standalone products follow the same shape: VPS from $4/mo for the first 3 months (then $11/mo, 1-year term), .com domains at $1 the first year, and Mail Basic email at $1.10/mo — on a 3-year term, the longest lock-in in their catalog.

### The renewal math

IONOS discloses its renewal pricing right on the plan cards, and the gaps are the widest we track: Plus goes $1/mo → $14/mo at renewal (the page itself calls it 'Save 94%'), Essential $4 → $8, Starter $6 → $10, Ultimate $10 → $18. The .com's regular price shows as $20/yr on IONOS's own strikethrough. Concretely: year one of Plus costs $12; year two costs $168.

The honest read: as a 12-month deal, Plus at $1/mo is nearly free hosting. As a multi-year home it's expensive — Essential's $8/mo renewal is the only tier that stays near budget territory. Decide which customer you are before checkout, and diarize month 11.

Renewal figures come from our [Hosting Renewal Price Index](/articles/hosting-renewal-prices) — intro vs renewal pricing for every provider we cover, verified on vendor sites and dated.

### Choose IONOS if

- One-year projects and campaign sites where the $1/mo intro does all the work
- Buyers who value phone support — every account gets a free assigned consultant
- European-audience sites that want a major EU operator

### Look elsewhere if

- Set-and-forget buyers — the renewal cliff is steep, disclosed or not
- Anyone unwilling to commit to a term: the advertised prices all require 1-year (email: 3-year) contracts
- Domain privacy purists — the free Private Registration add-on was discontinued in December 2025 under NIS2; company-registered domains now have contact details published

### Migration notes

Inbound: IONOS offers free assisted migration for websites and email on most plans, driven through the personal-consultant model rather than a self-serve tool. Outbound is conventional file/database export — but mind the contract term: leaving mid-term doesn't refund the prepaid year, and the consumer-review complaint pattern we weigh most heavily is billing that continues after cancellation attempts, so cancel in writing and keep the confirmation.

### Honest limitations

The pricing model is the product: nearly every advertised number is an intro rate on a contract term, and the renewal arithmetic above is the real price list. Support is phone-first via the assigned consultant — genuinely free, but it's also a sales channel. And the BBB complaint file (486 complaints on an A- rating as of September 2026) skews toward billing disputes, which is consistent enough across consumer sites that we treat it as a pattern, not noise.

Testing status: we haven't load-tested IONOS ourselves yet. This profile is built from vendor documentation, published plan specs and SLAs, and long-running community reports — and the pricing above is verified on the vendor's site, not copied from marketing. See [how we test](/how-we-test) for exactly what that means.
