## DigitalOcean, beyond the scorecard

Plan details as published on digitalocean.com, July 2026 — verify with the vendor before you buy.

### Plans, as published

DigitalOcean's basic (shared-CPU) droplets as published in July 2026: $4/mo for 512 MiB / 1 vCPU / 10 GB SSD / 500 GB transfer, $6/mo for 1 GB / 25 GB / 1,000 GB, $12/mo for 2 GB, scaling up a clean doubling curve. As of January 2026, droplets bill per second (60-second/$0.01 minimum) with monthly caps — you never pay more than the listed monthly price.

The ecosystem is the real product: managed databases, load balancers, Kubernetes, and an App Platform sit one click from the droplet you start with, and DO's documentation/tutorial library remains the best in the VPS business.

### The renewal math

No intro pricing exists to expire — $4/mo is the price indefinitely, which is why DO anchors the 1× (flat) group in our renewal tracker. The bill grows through add-ons you opt into: automated backups run 20% (weekly) or 30% (daily) of droplet cost — or a newer usage-based option from $0.01/GiB-month — and snapshots bill $0.06/GB-month, per the published pricing page. A $6 droplet with daily backups is really $7.80/mo; budget that way.

Renewal figures come from our [Hosting Renewal Price Index](/articles/hosting-renewal-prices) — intro vs renewal pricing for every provider we cover, verified on vendor sites and dated.

### Choose DigitalOcean if

- Developers comfortable with a terminal who want predictable, honest pricing
- Side projects that might become production — the upgrade path is seamless
- Teams that lean on documentation and community tutorials over support tickets

### Look elsewhere if

- You've never administered Linux — nothing is managed by default
- You need bundled email, cPanel, or one-click site management out of the box
- You want white-glove support without paying for a support plan

### Migration notes

Inbound and outbound are your job: rsync, database dumps, DNS. Snapshots make DO-to-DO moves trivial, but snapshots don't export — leaving means rebuilding from your own backups. The discipline that makes VPS hosting portable (config as code, external backups) is on you from day one.

### Honest limitations

Support tiers scale with spend — free accounts get community and ticket support with no response-time promise; paid support plans exist for businesses. Bandwidth overages bill beyond your pooled transfer. And the entry droplet's 512 MiB is genuinely tight: real WordPress or Node workloads want the $6–$12 tiers, so compare those prices — not the $4 headline — against competitors.

Testing status: we haven't load-tested DigitalOcean ourselves yet. This profile is built from vendor documentation, published plan specs and SLAs, and long-running community reports — and the pricing above is verified on the vendor's site, not copied from marketing. See [how we test](/how-we-test) for exactly what that means.
