Versus Head-to-head

# Kinsta vs WP Engine

The classic managed-WordPress money question. Both vendors publish persuasive comparison pages about each other; neither is a neutral source. Here's the scorecard we'd want as a buyer, with prices verified on both vendors' sites in September 2026.

Summary verdict

## Short answer

Entry pricing is close but no longer identical (verified September 2026): Kinsta lists $30/mo billed annually, WP Engine $28/mo for the first year on annual billing against a $35/mo standard rate — so price still shouldn't decide this. Pick Kinsta for the cleaner dashboard, Google Cloud infrastructure, and pricing that doesn't move at renewal. Pick WP Engine when its ecosystem is the draw — Advanced Custom Fields, Local, multisite tooling, and agency workflows — but note its terms explicitly allow pricing to change at renewal, so confirm your year-two rate before committing.

## Pricing and plan limits, decoded (verified September 2026)

Kinsta's Single-site plan is $30/mo billed annually ($350/yr) or $35/mo billed monthly, with 10 GB storage — and the entry tier can now be metered as either 35,000 visits or 20 GB of bandwidth (same price, switchable in MyKinsta). Kinsta was running a first-month-free promotion when we checked. Renewal equals the standard rate.

WP Engine restructured to an Essential / Core / Enterprise lineup in 2026. Essential's entry lists at $35/mo billed monthly or $28/mo for the first year on annual billing ($336 upfront, a 20%-off new-customer promo) for 1 site, 25,000 visits/mo, and 10 GB storage. The fine print notes pricing is subject to change at renewal — the renewal delta isn't published, which is exactly the kind of ambiguity our scoring penalizes.

Both meter usage: Kinsta by visits and CDN bandwidth, WP Engine by visits and storage. If your traffic is spiky, model a bad month at each vendor's published overage rates before choosing — overages, not list price, are where managed WP bills surprise people.

## Infrastructure and workflow

Kinsta runs on Google Cloud's premium tier with per-site containers; its MyKinsta dashboard is widely considered the cleanest in the niche, and staging, backups, and free migrations are standard.

WP Engine runs its own platform (with Google Cloud and AWS underneath) and owns a genuinely useful ecosystem: Advanced Custom Fields, the Local development app, Smart Plugin Manager, and multisite/agency tooling that Kinsta doesn't match.

We have not run head-to-head performance benchmarks on identical sites, and we don't repeat either vendor's speed claims. Both platforms are fast when configured properly; your plugin stack will matter more than the host at this tier.

## The honest tiebreakers

Renewal certainty: Kinsta. Its price today is its price next year; WP Engine reserves the right to reprice at renewal.

Ecosystem: WP Engine, clearly, if your team already uses ACF or Local.

Storage at entry: a tie — both give 10 GB. Visit allowances: read your analytics first — 25k visits (WP Engine) vs 35k (Kinsta) sounds like a lot until a post travels.

If neither feels right, Rocket.net ($25/mo billed annually, and it states it doesn't raise renewal prices) and Pressable ($250/yr) are credible cheaper alternatives we also profile.

### Best fit for

- + Businesses upgrading off shared hosting where downtime costs revenue
- + Agencies standardizing a managed WordPress stack
- + Teams comparing the two obvious premium managed-WP quotes

### Consider another option if

- − Your budget is under ~$25/mo — look at Rocket.net's entry plan or quality shared hosting instead
- − You want server-level control — managed WP hosts restrict plugins and configuration by design
- − Your site isn't WordPress

Questions readers ask

## FAQ

They're within a few dollars: Kinsta lists $30/mo billed annually, WP Engine $28/mo first-year annual against a $35/mo standard rate, as of September 2026. The real difference appears at renewal (Kinsta's rate is stable; WP Engine's terms allow changes) and in overage behavior under traffic spikes.
