# DreamHost Review: What Month-to-Month Billing Is Worth

DreamHost's advertised $2.89/mo renews at $10.99 — a 3.8× step, squarely mid-pack, and not by itself a reason to choose anything. The reason to choose DreamHost is the option most of its competitors have quietly removed: true month-to-month billing at a rate that is not punitive, from one of the few independent hosts still standing. Prices here were verified on September 7, 2026; plan and policy detail was read on dreamhost.com in July 2026.

Summary verdict

## Our verdict

DreamHost is a recommendation with one load-bearing feature. On price it is unremarkable — the entry Shared plan is $2.89/mo for the first year of annual billing and renews at $10.99/mo, about a 3.8× step, right in the middle of the shared-hosting pack. What separates it is that you can pay monthly and leave any month without a punitive rate, which turns the renewal question from a cliff into a choice. Price in two things before buying: email is a paid add-on rather than a bundled inclusion, which is the biggest practical gotcha at this price point, and the 97-day money-back window DreamHost was famous for is not in the current terms — the published policy we read in July 2026 says 30 days for shared hosting on card or PayPal payments.

## The price is not the story — the billing term is

The entry Shared plan runs $2.89/mo on the first year of annual billing, with unmetered bandwidth, free SSL, daily backups and a free first-year domain, as published in July 2026 and priced again on September 7, 2026. It renews at $10.99/mo — about 3.8× the intro, which puts DreamHost in the middle of the pack rather than at either extreme of our renewal tracker. Managed WordPress (DreamPress) starts at $14.99/mo first-year and renews at $19.99/mo. The full tier-by-tier grid sits on our DreamHost profile.

What is uncommon at this tier is that DreamHost still offers true month-to-month billing without a punitive rate. That single fact changes the arithmetic everyone else in budget hosting relies on. A renewal cliff only works as a business model if leaving is expensive or awkward; when you can pay for one month at a time and walk at any point, the year-two price becomes a decision you make rather than a bill you absorb.

So read the $2.89 as a first-year discount you may or may not take, and the $10.99 as the actual price of the product. If $10.99/mo with no commitment is a fair price for what you are hosting, DreamHost is a straightforward buy. If it is not, the intro year is a twelve-month rental with a clean exit — which is a more honest thing to sell than a four-year prepay.

## What our own monitoring recorded

DreamHost is in our uptime study cohort, so there are real figures rather than vendor claims. Across the August 8 to September 22, 2026 window — 45 days, roughly 460,000 checks across four regions on a five-minute interval — DreamHost recorded 18 minutes of hard downtime in a single multi-region episode, on August 29. That is the smallest hard-downtime total of any provider that recorded any at all: only five of the 34 measured providers logged a single failing minute in the window, and DreamHost's 18 minutes sit well below Hetzner's 89 and nowhere near Namecheap's 782.

It also logged 190 minutes of degraded time across 14 episodes, the longest 34 minutes on August 13. Degraded means the site answered successfully but slowly; we never count it as downtime. For scale, that places DreamHost seventh on the degraded top ten, against Flywheel's 5,191 minutes at the head of the list. It is a pattern worth watching rather than a problem — but ten providers in the same window logged zero incidents of any kind, so it is not a clean sheet either.

One thing to read sceptically: DreamHost publishes a 100% uptime guarantee in its terms, backed by credits. Our own measurement found 18 minutes of hard downtime in 45 days, which is a reminder that these guarantees are credit schedules with exclusion lists, not predictions. Read the exclusions before you treat one as insurance.

## Email, panel, refunds: the three things that catch people

Email costing extra on shared plans is the biggest practical gotcha at this price point, because several competitors bundle it. Mailboxes are a paid add-on after the trial, so a site that needs two or three business addresses should add that line to the monthly figure before comparing — or plan to host mail elsewhere, which is often the better answer anyway.

The panel is DreamHost's own build rather than cPanel. It is genuinely fine, and unfamiliar. The practical consequence is on the way out rather than the way in: the panel exports files and databases cleanly, but there is no cPanel-format archive to hand the next host, so moving means a manual import. Email is a separate add-on product, so migrating mail means exporting mailboxes separately. Inbound, a free automated WordPress migration plugin handles standard moves.

And the refund window has changed. DreamHost was known for a 97-day money-back guarantee, but the current published Terms of Service, checked in July 2026, specify a 30-day refund period for shared hosting on card or PayPal payments; domains and add-ons are non-refundable. Support is chat and ticket based, with phone callbacks available as a paid add-on. None of this is disqualifying — it is just different from the version of DreamHost that circulates in old forum threads.

## DreamHost vs Hostinger

This is the comparison that settles most DreamHost searches, because the two renew at exactly the same number. Hostinger's Premium plan renews at $10.99/mo and so does DreamHost's entry plan. The difference is entirely in what you pay to reach that renewal: Hostinger's $2.99/mo intro requires a 48-month prepay — $143.52 up front, a four-year commitment — while DreamHost's $2.89/mo is a single year, and month-to-month is available at all.

On our own measurement, Hostinger wins the window: it was one of ten providers with zero incidents of any kind between August 8 and September 22, 2026, against DreamHost's 18 minutes of hard downtime and 190 minutes of degraded time. On the cash deal, Hostinger also wins — four years at $2.99 is one of the best prepay offers in shared hosting. DreamHost wins on not being locked in for four years and on being independently owned, and it includes daily backups and a free first-year domain in the entry plan.

Neither bundles email, and both run a custom panel rather than cPanel, so the migration friction is similar in each direction. For reference on the other end of the scale: SiteGround's $2.99/mo intro renews at $17.99/mo, about 6× and the steepest standard-tier markup we track — which is the context in which DreamHost's 3.8× reads as mid-pack rather than greedy.

## What this review is based on

Two sources, and nothing else. The first is DreamHost's own published plan pages and its published Terms of Service, read on a dated pass: plan and policy detail in July 2026, prices re-verified on September 7, 2026. That is where every figure above comes from — the $2.89 intro, the $10.99 renewal, the DreamPress $14.99 to $19.99 step, the 30-day refund period, the email add-on, the uptime guarantee. The second is our own external availability monitoring, which covers DreamHost because it permits automated measurement: four probe regions, a five-minute interval, and a quorum rule before anything is recorded as an outage, with the exclusions and methodology dated and published on our uptime study page.

This is not a hands-on account review. We do not hold a DreamHost account, so there is no first-hand report here of the panel, the support queue, or the speed of a site running on their servers — and you should be suspicious of any review that gives you those without saying how it got them.

What that combination can tell you is solid: what the deal actually is, what it costs in year two, which inclusions are real and which are add-ons, what the refund policy currently says rather than what it used to say, and how available the platform has been over a measured 45-day window against 33 other providers on identical checks. What it cannot tell you is how support handles your emergency at 2am, how the custom panel will feel after a week, or how a specific site will perform on a specific shared server. For those, our figures narrow the field — they do not replace a 30-day trial you can actually refund.

### Best fit for

- + Privacy-minded owners who prefer an independent host
- + Anyone who values month-to-month billing as a real exit option
- + Simple sites that want unmetered bandwidth without metered-visit anxiety

### Consider another option if

- − You need bundled email at the entry price — mailboxes are a paid add-on after the trial
- − You want cPanel — DreamHost's custom panel takes adjustment
- − You are counting on the old 97-day refund window — the published policy now says 30 days

Questions readers ask

## FAQ

Yes, and it is the main reason to shortlist it. Uncommonly for this tier, DreamHost offers true month-to-month billing without a punitive rate, so you can leave any month. The advertised $2.89/mo is a first-year annual-billing price, but the monthly option exists alongside it — which changes the renewal question from a cliff into a choice.
